A little cheer goes up in my house whenever we hear of a new locally-owned restaurant opening in Round Rock. But this time the cheers were even louder, as the new restaurant just happens to be one of my families’ favorite types…..PIZZA.
We stopped into Fire & Ice Pizza Bar after church yesterday to get a feel of the place and try out their pizza for y’all (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.). And I was glad to bring my whole family to get their take on the pizza as well. We were pleasantly surprised with all that Fire & Ice offered in terms of menu, atmosphere, & location.
Fire & Ice: The Story
Fire & Ice Pizza Bar is a fast casual restaurant located in the Boardwalk Shopping Center across from the Home Depot. They have an excellent selection of Pizza, Wings, and toasted hoagies, as well as some great appetizers and salads. We also liked that they have a full-service bar and feature 12 artisan beers on tap, many of them local. Everything is made in-house including sauces, pizza dough, toppings and wing sauces.
The owners are not new to the pizza business. Having owned Manhattan Pie Co. in Georgetown for the last 5 years, they decided to bring some of their most successful menu items to the Round Rock area. I was able to meet one of the owners, Darryl Matthews, and I could see the passion he has for small business and the economy of our city. He is very happy to be able to open in our area and bring more locally-owned restaurants here. Fire & Ice also helps support other local businesses by serving Bluebonnet Beer Company, Round Rock’s only brewery, and the Maine Root Sodas, cane-sugar sodas from a group in Austin.
Fire & Ice: The Pizza
My family loves to eat pizza – we honestly eat it once a week. So the true test of Fire & Ice Pizza Bar was to impress them. We really liked the diversity of the menu. They have a great selection of Artesian Pizzas – with unique combinations and flavors. I went for The Godfather – alfredo sauce, chicken, spinach, bacon, and basil. It was delicious. And all their pizzas come in a 10-inch size, perfect for one.
My kids like a plain pizza, so I was happy to see you can make your own pizzas as well. This is the large pepperoni & meatball.
Everything is homemade and the crust was light and crispy. They have a unique oven that stone-bakes the pizza along a conveyor belt, baking it in 4 minutes, so they can crank out the pizzas. We also really enjoyed the marinara sauce on the pizzas. Very robust and flavorful.
The Rest of the Menu
Fire & Ice Pizza Bar also has wings, toasted hoagies, fresh salads with house-made dressings, and a great selection of appetizers. We tried the Badass Nachos – toasted on fried wontons & covered in alfredo sauce, chicken, olives, tomatoes, peppers, & jalapeños, they were amazing. I could have made a meal out of these guys!
We also enjoyed the fried pickles, garlic knots, and the cheese bread – all were made to order and came out hot. And we couldn’t leave without trying a shake. They offer homemade shakes – Nutella & pretzel, sea salt & caramel, strawberry, Vanilla bean, or Bananas Foster.
