New Art in Round Rock
Introducing the brand new Tooter the Turtle and Armadillo Family hardwood carvings! These intricate and beautiful statues were carved by artist Cam Dockery at Bearly Making It-Chainsaw Carving from two tree trunks salvaged from the wreckage of the 2022 tornado.
On March 21st, 2022, an EF-2 tornado touched down in Round Rock, causing extensive damage to the city, over 680 homes, and over 13 acres of trees in Freeman Park. The Round Rock Police, Fire, Transportation, and Parks Department crews immediately went to work and were quickly joined by hundreds of community organizations and volunteers. For over 4 weeks straight, teams worked to clear roadways, brush, debris, and to restore infrastructure and utilities to impacted areas.
It was during the cleanup of Freeman Park that the Parks and Recreation Department came across two large tree trunks among the debris. Inspired by the camaraderie shown by the Round Rock community, these tree trunks were transformed into these amazing works of art; giving them the opportunity to continue watching over the City of Round Rock as they always had.
Though we will never forget March 21st, 2022, these two statues will serve as a reminder that the Round Rock community can overcome anything when we come together.
Tootor the Turtle can be found at the Play for All Abilities Park (151 N AW Grimes Blvd.) and the Armadillo Family can be found outside the Clay Madsen Recreation Center (1600 Gattis School Rd.)
