Library on the Go: Round Rock Public Library’s New Mobile Book Option
Not every Round Rock family can make it downtown during open hours. That’s why RRPL rolled out two new ways to grab books this summer, without a full trip. First, there’s a pop-up program called Library on the Go. Second, there’s a 24/7 self-service Hold Locker for grabbing holds on your own schedule.
The short version: Library on the Go brings a mini pop-up library to two Round Rock parks this summer. It runs select Saturday mornings through August. Meanwhile, the Hold Locker at the library’s parking garage lets cardholders pick up holds any time, day or night.
What Is Library on the Go?
Library on the Go is RRPL’s new pop-up library service. RRPL built it because many residents don’t have easy access to the main library building. So, staff set up at neighborhood parks instead, with books, movies, and activities. That means you won’t need to drive downtown or find parking.
It’s a nice fit for families already headed to the park on a Saturday morning. Just swing by the playscape, and leave with a stack of books, too.
Where to Find It This Summer
Library on the Go visits two Round Rock parks through August, though dates may shift for rain or extreme heat:
- Frontier Park (1804 Frontier Trail), with visits 4th Saturdays through August 22, 9–11 a.m. Look for us near the playscape and tennis courts, on the east end.
- Meadow Lake Park (2901 Settlement Dr), with visits 2nd Saturdays through August 8, 9–11 a.m. Look for us near the dock and playscape, on the south end.
That means the next stops are Meadow Lake Park on July 11 and Frontier Park on July 25. Both run from 9–11 a.m. Want a visit to your own neighborhood park? RRPL is open to adding more, so just call Library Outreach at 737-268-0766. Keep in mind, any park request must be within Round Rock city limits.
How It Works
Most Library on the Go items require a Round Rock Public Library card. However, you don’t need one ahead of time. Instead, staff can sign families up on the spot with a valid government-issued ID. That means a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. If your ID doesn’t show a current address, bring a piece of mail that does. Also, kids need a parent or guardian present to sign up.
Items borrowed at the park are due at RRPL’s next visit to that park. So, bring them back then. Or, drop them off anytime at the library itself. Use the front desk, or the book drop on the west side of the building. Occasionally, staff bring free books, movies, or activities to give away, though we can’t promise them every visit.
Meet the Hold Locker: Grab-and-Go Pickup, Anytime
For families who place holds online, RRPL also added a Hold Locker. It’s a self-service, contact-free locker system with 24/7 access. You’ll find it on the first floor of the library’s parking structure, off the N Sheppard Street entrance. There’s a designated parking spot right at the lockers.
To use it, first select “Hold Lockers” as your pickup location when you place a hold in the library catalog. Then, once you get the ready notification, head to the locker any time, day or night. Use your library card to open it. Holds stay in the locker for three days, after which RRPL releases them back into circulation. So, grab yours once you get the alert. Returns still go through RRPL’s two 24/7 book drops off Liberty Street.
Note: Hold Locker pickup isn’t available for interlibrary loans or select oversized items. But if you need help reaching the locker, RRPL staff can accommodate you. Just call 512-218-7001 or email rrpls@roundrocktexas.gov when you place your hold.
More Ways to Keep Books Close to Home
Round Rock families have more low-effort ways than ever to keep books in the rotation this summer. Between Library on the Go, the Hold Locker, and the Little Free Libraries around town, you have more options than ever. A full library trip is no longer your only choice.
