Connecting Round Rock: Advocates for Veterans – AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter
Association of the United States Army
Texas Capital Area Chapter
Describe the part of your mission focusing on veterans and the work.
The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Texas Capital Area Chapter is a nonprofit educational and professional development association serving America’s Army and supporting a strong national defense. AUSA provides a voice for the Army, supports the Soldier, and honors those who have served in order to advance the security of the nation. The AUSA – Texas Capital Area Chapter is open to all Army ranks and all components — including Active, National Guard, Army Reserve — Government civilians, retirees, Wounded Warriors, Veterans, concerned citizens and family members. Indeed our AUSA chapter welcomes anyone who subscribes to the philosophy of a strong national defense with special concern for the US Army. Community businesses and defense industry companies are also welcome to join AUSA.
Our Mission is as follows: AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter supports soldiers, their families, and Army civilians, provides a voice for the Army, and honors those who have served.
As the Army’s premier, nonprofit, educational, and professional association, we Educate those we serve (soldiers and their families, Army civilians, retired soldiers and veterans, and the businesses and industries that support the Army) with programs, products, resources, and events… Inform our members, Congress, and the American public about issues affecting America’s Army – Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve, and Connect America’s Total Army, its industry partners, like-minded associations, and other supporters at the national, regional, and chapter levels.
What is your favorite part about the work your organization does?
Our favorite part about working with the AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter is working with soldiers and their families. Our VP for Family Programs guides our efforts to support families of soldiers during deployments and times of challenge. We support numerous “Yellow Ribbon” events to assist families during these critical times. Additionally, we are a major sponsor for the “Our Community Salute” celebration each year in April to honor the high school seniors in Williamson and Travis counties who have enlisted in the US Armed Forces. Our chapter also assists other military service non-profit organizations in supporting wounded warriors and honoring the service of our veterans. We are an affiliate with the Georgetown Rotary Club “Field of Honor.” It is our honor to support our veterans with this awesome display of the United States of America flags. We also provide awards and high the winners of various Army unit competitions with the Texas Army National Guard and Army Futures Command. These awards focus on their “Solider of the Year”, “NCO of the Year” and “Best Warrior/Squad” winners. Additionally, provide awards to the top cadets at The University of Texas ROTC program awards banquet and also local high school Junior ROTC cadets. It is also a pleasure to work with our local Round Rock and Georgetown Chambers of Commerce to support military service and veterans programs and social events to provide mentoring and leadership training as a part of our “Young Professional” program.
What is one challenge your organization faces?
One challenge is sharing information about our organization with the citizens of our local communities about the mission and benefits of membership in our non-profit organization. We have both individual and community partner (corporate) membership, with our basic membership being provided at no cost to the join. In order to tell our story and inform others about our organization, we have a social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter (X), and our website.
How does your organization/business celebrate the veterans you serve on Independence Day?
The Texas Capital Area Chapter participated in Independence Day events in our local area with our immediate past chapter president, MG (Ret) Robert L. Halverson, presenting at the Georgetown VFW Post 8587.
How can Round Rock (and the surrounding areas) support your organization?
A great way to support the AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter would be to attend one of our meetings and learn more about our organization and the numerous activities that we are engaged in to support soldiers, veterans, and their families. Our meetings are conducted eight times a year on the first Wednesday of the month at noon. The meetings are held at Camp Mabry, Austin, Texas, in the Texas National Guard Headquarters Building #8 auditorium. Everyone is welcome to join us at no cost to the individual.
Is there anything else you would like us to know?
The AUSA Texas Capital Area Chapter is growing with more than 1150 local members. The National Headquarters of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) has also recognized us as the “Best Chapter” in our category for four out of the last five years. We are most fortunate to have a strong Executive Committee of leaders who manage and lead our chapter to successfully support our members and military families in the Austin, Round Rock, and Georgetown areas.
