Mystery Night Returns to Round Rock!
After a six-year hiatus, one of Round Rock’s most beloved traditions is making a dramatic return. Mystery Night, the interactive fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Round Rock Public Library, celebrates its 30th production this August, reviving a community favorite that’s part whodunit, part hometown celebration.
The event began in 1989 when Friends member Bonnie Horowitz borrowed a script from another library and kicked off the idea of the Mystery Night fundraiser. All but the first play has been an original script written by the library’s staff, making the event a true showcase of local creativity.
At its core, Mystery Night is an audience participation murder mystery in three acts, where attendees play detective and try to solve the crime. This year’s production, Into Temptation, brings a holiday noir twist to the format.
Set on Austin’s 6th Street at Christmastime, the scene is festive but filled with intrigue. “The nights are cold, but the bars are a warm refuge for all kinds of characters,” the teaser hints. “Ralph the bartender will welcome you with a nod and sage advice… but the front door opens for anyone.”
Proceeds from Mystery Night originally supported the Summer Reading Program but have evolved to support the library’s ever-changing needs. This year’s event will benefit the Library’s new bookmobile and outreach initiatives designed to serve the growing Round Rock community.
In a notable first, the Friends are partnering with Penfold Theatre Company to host four performances at Penfold’s venue, located at 2120 North Mays Street, Suite 290, in Round Rock, from August 29 to 31.
Event details and tickets are available through folroundrock.org and penfoldtheatre.org/on-stage/calendar. For those eager to solve a mystery—and support a great cause—it’s an evening not to be missed!
