Grand Reopening! Round Rock Stagecoach Inn
Update on this Historic Event
On Saturday, 10/19, a crowd gathered. They gathered as businesses, nonprofits, City leadership, Chamber support, historical Round Rock families, and residents. They gathered because they knew This Place Matters.
That “Place” is the Stagecoach Inn, an essential piece of Round Rock history that has been restored and lives along Chisholm Trail. A Grand Re-Opening celebration commemorates the 12-year journey to ensure this piece of Round Rock history has a forever home.
Congratulations to all those involved in keeping this part of Round Rock’s legacy safe.
Round the Rock was fortunate to attend, hear the story of this journey, and help celebrate this historic moment. As Mayor Morgan said, “This place will be here long after we are all gone.” The history will remain.
Below are pictures and videos of the celebration. You can also check out the KXAN coverage here.
Original Post
The Round Rock Stagecoach Inn, built by John J. Harris (c. 1848-1853), has been beautifully restored through efforts of the City of Round Rock and advocacy of Round Rock Preservation, a local non-profit historic preservation organization. The Inn was saved from demolition and moved from its original Round Rock Avenue location to its current location at 750 Chisholm Trail Road in April 2018. The Inn is roughly 175 years old and reportedly the first stagecoach stop in Texas. Mail was delivered, horses were watered and changed out, and weary travelers could rest and enjoy a fine meal prepared by Susie Harris on their travels along the Shawnee Trail/Chisholm Trail.
A celebration to commemorate the restoration of this historic structure will be held October 19, 2024 at the Inn’s new location within the Chisholm Trail Crossing Park in Round Rock. The public is invited. A brief program will begin at 10:00 a.m., a ribbon cutting, and unveiling of an engraved memorial brick display, followed by a “Come and Go” open house at the Inn will highlight the event.
Light refreshments will be served.
