WCAG: Building Drawing Skills #1

Discover the joy of drawing in this welcoming, hands-on class designed especially for the Novice with no experience, and the Beginner with limited experience. If you’ve ever said, “I can’t even draw a straight line,” this is the perfect place to start.

We’ll build skills step by step, beginning with the fundamentals of drawing—how to truly see your subject, simplify shapes, and translate what you observe onto paper with greater confidence and accuracy. From there, we’ll explore shading techniques that bring dimension and depth to your work, learning how to use light and dark values to create form, contrast, and atmosphere.

Students will work with graphite and conté pencils to practice a range of techniques, including line control, value scales, blending, proportion, and composition. You’ll learn how to measure for scale and accuracy, how to create strong, balanced compositions, and how to use highlights and shadows to make your drawings come alive.

This session combines demonstration, guided practice, and individual feedback in a supportive, encouraging environment. Questions are always welcome, and progress is celebrated at every stage. By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid foundation in drawing principles—and, just as important, the confidence to keep creating,
