What is International Women in Engineering Day?

International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated on June 23rd each year to recognize and celebrate the tremendous achievements and contributions of women in the field of engineering. This day is meant to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in engineering and to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Why This Day Matters

Women have been historically underrepresented within STEM fields, and these shocking statistics still hold true today.

  • Women only represent 16.1% of all employed persons working in architecture and engineering occupations in the U.S., with mechanical engineering and electrical engineering having even lower representation.
  • Studies show that 32% of women in engineering and technical roles are still the only woman in the room at engineering-related meetings at work.
  • More than 32% of female STEM majors switch to another major outside of STEM before they graduate, and studies have shown a direct correlation between this high percentage and the lack of role models and gender biases faced by students in the classroom.
  • The pay gap persists within the STEM industry, where, on average, women in Texas earn only 84% of what their male colleagues earn doing the same job.

How You Can Celebrate the Day

You can celebrate this impactful day by sharing the stories of women you know working in STEM. Or explore the Stories of Women in STEM at the Smithsonian. You can do a STEM activity at home with your daughter and learn more about science and technology while encouraging them to get creative and curious. Lastly, you can support an organization actively working to bring STEM education to girls here in Texas, such as Reinvented Inc.

How You Can Support Women and Girls in STEM Beyond June 23rd

Reinvented Inc., is a 501(c)(3) organization that is actively working to empower and inspire girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Founded by a new member of the Austin community, Caeley Looney, in 2019, Reinvented sets out to share the stories and experiences of women working in STEM fields while enabling girls to get hands-on with engineering.

Reinvented was initially created as a magazine geared toward girls in middle and high school. Each issue of Reinvented Magazine features interviews with women in STEM who share their stories, career paths, experiences, and advice for their young readers. Print copies of each magazine are distributed twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, and are often donated to Title I schools and low-income communities around the country!

Since 2019, Reinvented has grown and developed a second program called Princesses with Powertools. To date, their volunteer princesses (aka full-time women in engineering dressed up as our favorite princesses) have helped over 15,000 girls conquer their fears and learn how to use their very first power tool: a hand drill!
