The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. It’s the celebration of the emancipation of slavery in Texas. Every June 19th, we celebrate the day in 1865 that Texans were told by Union troops that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. In addition, the name Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” in honor of the date of Granger’s announcement and first appeared around 1903.
