Give a Shelter Dog a Holiday Break with “Home for the Holidays”
Bring Joy to a Shelter Dog: Participate in Texas Humane Heroes’ Home for the Holidays Program
The holiday season is a time for warmth, love, and togetherness. For many shelter dogs, however, it can be a lonely period. Texas Humane Heroes, a no-kill, nonprofit organization in Leander, was established in 1979. The organization is dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs and cats rescued from overcrowded shelters across Texas. This year, they invite compassionate individuals to make a difference through their Home for the Holidays program.
What Is Home for the Holidays?
Home for the Holidays is a fostering initiative that allows you to bring a shelter dog into your home from December 23rd to 26th. Participating provides a deserving dog with a temporary loving environment, away from the shelter, during the festive season. This experience not only enriches the dog’s life but also brings the joy of companionship to your household.
How to Get Involved
To participate, please note the following requirements:
- Age and Location: You must be at least 21 and reside within 30 miles of the Leander Adoption Center (map below).
- Application: Complete the Holiday Foster Care Application, which is available on the Texas Humane Heroes website.
- Meet & Greet: If you have other dogs at home, a “Meet & Greet” is required between your current dog(s) and the foster dog. These sessions are held onsite at Texas Humane Heroes and facilitated by their staff between December 20th and 22nd, from 12 pm to 3:30 pm.
- Housing: The foster dog must be kept indoors at all times unless accompanied by you on a leash.
- Safety Plan: Ensure you have a plan to separate the foster dog from your pets or children if necessary.
Key Dates
- Pick-Up: December 23rd, between 11 am and 4 pm.
- Drop-Off: December 26th, between 12 pm and 4 pm, if you’re not adopting.
If you decide to make the foster dog a permanent family member, contact the Foster Coordinator at foster@txhh.org.
Why Foster During the Holidays?
Fostering during the holidays provides numerous benefits:
- For the Dog: A break from the shelter environment reduces stress and increases the dog’s chances of future adoption.
- For You: Experience the joy and fulfillment of providing love and care to a dog in need during the festive season.
- For the Community: Supporting local shelters helps manage overcrowding and allows more animals to be rescued.
How to Apply
To become a holiday foster, complete the application form available on the Texas Humane Heroes website. For any questions, reach out to the Foster Coordinator at foster@txhh.org.
This holiday season, open your heart and home to a shelter dog. Your kindness can make a world of difference in their lives and bring immeasurable joy to yours.
