March for the Arts | March 2018

March 2018 is proclaimed by a number of organizations as a celebration of The Arts that take place in schools.  Our Round Rock ISD Council for the Arts has declared March 2018 as March for the Arts and our community is invited to join us at the many school and community arts events across Round Rock to grow your engagement, participation and support!  Be sure to be part of this initiative by downloading and using our March for the Arts calendar. See the detailed information below to guide your March for the Arts experience.  Share your experience using #marchforthearts.

In Round Rock ISD, We observe three celebrations within our arts disciplines:

Music in Our Schools Month – Music In Our Schools Month® or “MIOSM®” is the National Association of Music Education (NAfME) annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools. Music In Our Schools Month® began as a single statewide Advocacy Day and celebration in New York in 1973 and grew over the decades to become a month-long celebration of school music in 1985.

Theatre in Our Schools Month – The Educational Theatre Association and the International Thespian Society have partnered with the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) to sponsor Theatre in Our Schools (TIOS), a campaign designed to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs for all students. TIOS presentations and advocacy may happen anytime in schools, theatres, and other public spaces. However, we recognize and promote March as the official TIOS month, with a series of community- and school-based events and celebrations nationwide.

Youth Art Month – Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. It was created in 1961 by ACMI, a non-profit association of art and craft materials manufacturers, in cooperation with the National Art Education Association (NAEA).  In RRISD, we celebrate Youth Art Month in multiple ways.  During March, many campuses host Gallery Night Exhibitions that showcase the work of students K-12, Elementary Art Faculty host a district-wide student exhibition at the Performing Arts Center with an opening reception attended by 700+ parents, student artists and community members along with selling YAM t-shirts to over 1000 people in our community each year.
