The Scarlet Rabbit Opens in Round Rock

One of the prettiest and best themed restaurants I have been to in the Austin area, The Scarlet Rabbit opened in downtown Round Rock just a few short weeks ago.  I  visited the new restaurant with a few girlfriends on a Sunday evening the week it opened and we really enjoyed it.

What really drew us in was the themeing.  The restaurant mimics Alice’s fall down the Rabbit Hole in Alice in Wonderland and designer Sonja Snow does an amazing job of bringing it to life.  From the wonderful collection of bottles with the tag “Drink ME, to the rabbit hole door on the patio to the multiple doors that confuse you on the way out – it is really well done.

It was a beautiful night, so we opted to sit on the patio.  There are multiple picnic tables to choose from and a small bar area with high seats.  Also, there is a small stage in the corner – would be a great place to see a local band. Don’t forget to look up while you are out there, to see even more of the theme perched in the tree.

I could go on and on about the décor, but I know you really want to know about the food.  The Scarlet Rabbit has a very eclectic menu.  If you are looking for family home-style food, this is not the place to go. But they do have several choices that will awaken your taste buds.

We tried the Bacon Shrimp Bites & Fried Oyster Nachos to start with. Both were very tasty, but we all liked the oysters the best.  Having only had raw oysters before, my friends said these were really good.  Personally, I had not ever tried an oyster before.  I really liked them and will probably get them again.

For dinner, we tried the Monk Fish and the Fried Chicken.   Monk is a white, flaky fish and it was delicious.  The sauce on top was a little heavy and we probably would have liked a little less on it, especially during the summer.  Such a fad now, I liked that the Chicken was served with a zucchini waffle, spinach, and jalapeño maple glaze.  It had a spicy kick to it and it was delicious.

The drinks were lovely – they all have a fun theme to them as well. I probably would not take my kids here, as they are not adventurous eaters (even though they do have a kid’s menu with hamburgers, chicken nuggets, etc.), and I’d rather save this spot for a date night personally.

Now that said, my husband is a meat & potatoes guy, so he would not be overwhelmed with The Scarlet Rabbit’s menu.  They do offer braised short ribs and a brisket burger that he may enjoy.  But we have plenty of places here in Round Rock to satisfy those that love their meat & potatoes.  I love that we have someplace that is different and unique so close to home.

The Scarlet Rabbit is an experience.  Go with a date, take your time to enjoy the ambiance and really taste the food.  Or go with a bunch of friends, have a leisurely visit on the inviting patio and order a bunch of things to try.

I feel we are pretty lucky to have this caliber of restaurant in Round Rock, we need to support it and allow it to remain the fun experience it can be. Let’s support these local business owners and help grow the downtown area again!

The decor was incredible and well-planned, the food was unique and delicious and the drinks were amazing! (Not to mention the flashback music playing – including Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”!) It is a great place to hang out with friends and we will definitely return. Happy to have them in Round Rock!
